Does anyone have first hand knowledge on painting an aluminum (Gil type) bracket? This is a full transom wide bracket similar to a Whaler Drive.

I need to remove the old unknown existing bottom paint, repair nicks , add a barrier coat and paint with bottom paint.

I also need to prep and paint areas that are above the water line. The original factory paint has bubbled off in some areas. The boat will be in salt water 6 months per year.

What are some of the best methods for removing the bottom paint on the bracket?
What are the best cleaners and self etching primers?
Best Primer? Best bottom paints?
Best top coat for above the water line repairs?

When I wanted to treat all underwater metals on my 28 Albin diesel inboard I contacted technical services at Pettit Paint.
They were fantastic in helping me, and their products performed admirably.
I was not dealing with aluminum, but just about everything else.
Give them a call.

BTW, I used the Pettit underwater metals kit, and then 2 coats of vivid.
I have touched up for 3 or 4 seasons now.
I moor in warm 75 degree salt water from May thru October. Each time my boat hauler takes her out for the season, he claims it's the cleanest hull and metals of anyone he hauls.
Metal final coat is Pettit Vivid anti-fouling, and the rest of the hull is Pettit Hydrocoat anti-fouling. Excellent products.

Best of luck.
