[In] shopping for OMC throttle and shift cables, I see that there is a generation change [around] 1979. Here's what I'm facing: I have brand new, never used, side mount, OMC 1975 remote control box, and a 1993 OMC motor to be controlled by it. They both use the ubiquitous "red plug", so both the motor and the remote are electrically compatible with each other.

And I just know there is a simple solution to which generation of cables I need to order (pre-1979 or 1979-up) to use my 1975 remote with my 1993 motor.

In the pre-1975 design, the cable at the remote end is captured by a barrel collar with two opposing grub screws to keep the cable tip from sliding out of the barrel collar. In the 1979-newer design, the remote end of the cable has an eye instead of just bare cable.

On the motor end, the 1979-up cables have plastic ends that screw on or off, (and can thus be used for minor adjustments). The 1978-older designs have plastic ends at the motor end too--but I don't know if they unscrew or not. If they do, I suppose I could get the older cables, unscrew the old-style motor-ends and replace them with new-style motor ends?

Has anyone done this who knows for sure?

I know it's been done dozens of times by the "hot rodders" over on the go-fast outboarding forum but they haven't answered my yet and it's been more than 12 hours.

The reason the just-acquired remote control box is brand new is that it was given to my wife's grandparents as a gift from the team of OMC engineers that used to do their testing in the grandparent's private section of Lake Havasu back in the 1960's and 7190's. The OMC engineering and test crew were very thankful and generous, even giving the grandparents free outboard motors from time to time.

For control boxes prior to the redesign in 1978, you have to use the old style cables that have the bare inner wire exposed out each end. You then have to fit the control box plastic sleeves and the engine plastic adapters using set screws. The fittings normally come as a kit.
