The speedometer tubing coming off the [gearcase] of my Mercury outboard came loose. I have speed [measurement] on my [GPS receiver]. Since I do not use this tubing, do I have to reconnect it?

No, if your worried about water leaking into your gearcase, ease your mind, its impossible. Since your not using the speedo, get rid of all the tubing. Of course, now your speedo is sitting in your dash panel, not working. I would reattach the tubing or replace it with new, so at least the speedo is working, even though its not accurate.rich |

The pitot tube built into the gearcase will squirt a stream of water upward if you do not cap the barb the speedometer tubing attaches to. The normal was to do this is to leave a short length of the tubing on there, bend it over 180 degrees and secure it with a plastic zip tie. You can also insert a plug into the this short stub of tubing. |

The reverse will happen if the tubing is loose from the dash side, at least for the water temp tubing. All summer we wondered why there was warm water coming acroos our feet. I could never find the end of the tubing until i cleaned out the interior of the CC and found one little extra tube.... |
