I have been having a problem with this engine for a while. After running for a while and then sitting for about 10 minutes its hard to start. I am getting 60 psi and 55 psi for the compression test. I called evinrude and they told me there is no spec for compression only that the two readings should be 10% of each other. I noticed that the water from the tell tale is intermittent at idle and is more steady at higher rpm. I pulled off the thermostat and will check it. The water pump was just redone. The temp on the head seams hot to the touch( not red hot). Another thing I noticed is that the fuel primer solenoid hose to the carb seems to be leaking a little( without pushing in the key switch). I am on my third fuel primer solenoid, replaced the fuel pump, coils, powerpack ,rebuilt carb several times checked reed valves.. When the engine is running it idles nice and has plenty of power. Its just the starting issue that makes the engine un reliable. Am I in denial about the compression, is a rebuild in order or do I keep playing with this engine?

How about a model number?Your compression is way too low for any 30hp, better pull a cylinder head and inspect the piston and cylinder walls. |

Its a 1991 30 hpEEIC. Cylindar walls look good. |

Since it has plenty of power, I'm wondering if you did the compression test correctly. Did you pull it over several times until the guage reading maxed out?I had starting problems with my 1973 Evinrude 50HP and new plugs did the trick for the most part. I do fine it does flood very easily and sometimes like your motor it does give me a little trouble starting after running for a while and then sitting for a bit. The joys of owning an older 2-stroke. |

After it is started, the engine runs and idles nice, with plenty of power. I called evinrude and they gave me a couple of things to try. Adjust the carb richer, Adjust the cam follower up to 1/4 inch late, try mid grade fuel. |

You may be getting "heat soak" that is erroneously called vapor lock. The fuel boils out of the carb from the heat that develops under the motor cover when the engine is turned off.Next time you stop, remove the motor cover and when its time to go, see if it starts easier. Ethanol fuel and gasoline additives can contribute to heat soak problems. |

hot carbed engines sometimes need a little throttle to start. Are you giving it a little throttle (1/8 to1/4) while trying to start it? Is this a new problem? |

I got this engine used a couple of years ago. Originally the fuel primer solenoid was dumping gas into the carb. Over the winter, I replaced the water pump, head gasket, thermostat. Next spring I had a bogging issue, which came and went. Had the engine running nice for about 2 months and then the bogging issue came back.To make a long story short, I replaced the fuel pump, fuel primer solenoid, rebuilt carb, coils and power pack. I don't believe I had this starting problem in the beginning. So far I have had the boat out two times and it did not have a bogging problem. |

Well today I replaced my water jacket cover after inspecting the thermostat which had some crap on it, I also blew out the water passages with compressed air. I pulled the plugs out and gaped to 30 thousandths. I ran a fresh tank of mid grade gasoline. I ran the engine on the hose , starting and stopping it thru out the day. The engine started up right away with no problems even after letting it sit. Hopefully my engine problems are over. I will report back next time after running it in the water. |
