hello. I just bought an 85 15 SS and am in the process of removing all wood for restoration. My question is are there any tips for removing the console box with the steering wheel. I am assuming I will have to disconnect the steering cable and was looking for any tips or suggestions.

thanks

Mine is probably the same as yours so it goes like this: remove the nut from the steering wheel, under the teak center cap ,the wheel is a taper fit to the shaft. I removed my console and used a brass hammer and a friend to hold the wheel and pound the console away. Don't pry it off, you will only mar the surface. Remove the two screws from the black bezel, then the three bolts that hold the cable box to the bracket that is bolted to the console.

Steering wheel puller, you need to do equal pressure on at least two stops when pulling up. Once the wheel puller is in place tap on the end with a hammer to pop the steering wheel off, when you put the wheel back on use some good marine grease on the steering shaft...
