[On a 1996 Mercury 125-HP outboard] the common warning beeping that results from the float in the oil tank is not working correctly. I know this because I removed the tank, turned it upside down and the beeping stopped. I turned right side up and beeping started again. I removed the sensor, and the beeping stopped. I know oil is being pumped because level in oil tank is going down. I took precaution and pre-mixed oil in gas tank when I did this check. I always check the level of my oil.

Is there any reason why I should not disconnect the sensor? Not cut the horn line; leave that alone. It seems that sensor is only for the level of the float in the oil tank. I just do not want to spend $100 for something that I would not need. Silly how you can not buy just the float.

PS: love this site! ton of info on it for me!

As I recall, I think the oil tank level switch is a magnetically-operated switch, with the float containing some sort of a magnet. When the tank level is too low, the float brings the magnet close enough to the magnetically operated switch to actuate the switch. If the switch is a normally-open switch that closes when the oil tank level is too low, you can just remove the switch from the alarm circuit and insulate the wires that were connected to it. The result will be the alarm system will no longer alarm when the oil tank level is too low.

A better remedy might be to try to get the float out of the tank. Perhaps you can replace the buoyant element of the float with something home-made, at a much lower cost.
