I bought a 1987 Whaler Temptation 2500 in December 2011 and this is my second season with it in the water. I repowered it this winter with an e-Tec 300 hp and the boat has been great. (Repowering discussion is here: http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/007834.html )Unfortunately, every time I get on the boat to hit the water, there is about 20-30 gallons of salt water in the cuddy. There is a porthole underneath the floor board of the cuddy, the plug for which I replaced at the beginning of the season and tightened down very well. I feel confident this is not the source of the water. I'm aware of the two wells that run the length of the cockpit that were intended for running cables and wires that regularly accumulate water. I also feel these are not a likely source for the water since these drain to the rear bilge which I run regularly. I have, however, noticed water constantly trickling down from somewhere beneath the helm. Not a huge amount of water but it is very consistent. I should also mention that last season I had the windshield re-bedded and the weather striping replaced. Are there any Temptation (or Outrage or Revenge) owners out there who have some wisdom about what might be causing this leaking? The 15 minute bilge routine--while providing an excellent upper body workout--is getting very old at this point. Please let me know. Thanks!

First, let me say that I have never experienced or had to diagnose this type of problem. Since it is saltwater, you most likely have a leak in the hull. I have read of others experiences related to this type of problem and the general consensus was, 1) pull the boat out of the water, 2) fill the hull with water and 3) observe any water leaking out of the hull. Since you re-powered the hull, could the problem be related to the old or new motor mount holes? This might be a good place to start with the leak detection. Good luck and please update with your findings, may help someone else find a problem. Robert |

I have, however, noticed water constantly trickling down from somewhere beneath the helm. Not a huge amount of water but it is very consistent. This could be from a speedometer tube running from the outboard to the helm. even if you do not have a speedometer, the tube could still be in place from a previous install or included in your e tec wiring harness. |

The pitot tube could dribble quite a bit of water if it is connected to the engine and open at the helm. I guess you could determine speed if you keep track of how fast your shoe fills with salt water. |

How long does it take to accumulate 20-30 gallons of salt water in the cabin? You speak of water trickling down from the helm... have you tasted it? If it's indeed salt water then it is most likely the source of the water in the cabin. As wezie stated it may be water that is being forced back up the speedometer tube or pitot hose as you are using the boat... Have someone who is capable take the helm while under way, then you need to get your head under the console and figure out where the trickle of water is coming from. I would suspect that it may even be siphoning back into the boat from the pitot tube after you come to a stop... Norm |

Thanks for all the great info, guys.I think I've successfully addressed this problem. After bailing out the cabin bilge, I watched as water came bubbling up from around the cabin through hull plug. So I had the brass tube for the cabin through hull replaced and that seems to have fixed it. Although the saga continues.... My bilge pump recently stopped working because some wires went bad. While the bilge was out, we got a series of heavy rain storms and the cabin again filled up with about 20 gallons of water. It tasted like a mix of salt and fresh water. I'm thinking that the water filled up in the wells and leaked forward into the cabin. I guess we'll see what happens next time it rains while the pump is working. Thanks again for the info, guys. |
