Today I received three salt water fishing seats ordered for my 1981 Sport 13. The seats were made by Tempress ( www.tempress.com ) and are like the fishing seats on my previous Dauntless 16. The quality is very comparable to Boston Whaler OEM fishing seats. They consist of a folding poly clam shell frame and two removable cushions (seat & back) which attach by snaps. I ordered them with poly swivel mounts which allow the seats to be quickly and easily removed by depressing a keeper and sliding the seat forward and off the mount. All hardware is stainless steel including any staples.

This weekend I intend to mount two seats to the rear thwart and one to the front thwart. The front seat will perform double duty as a forward pedestal seat for fishing. It will be removable from the front thwart to be used on a pedestal mounted to the forward locker cover which is semi-permanently attached to the deck.

While I don't like this departure from the classic design my wife and I will be better able to enjoy our Sport with more comfortable seating. I intend to purchase or fabricate spare thwart seats and a forward locker cover for when/if the time ever comes for a restoration.

Meanwhile I will begin to attack all the little cosmetic details requiring attention. Hopefully, over the next few years I'll be able to get the Sport looking like a gently used Boston Whaler.

You know what I don't like about semi-fixed seats is that when we were out on our 13 and 15, I found myself constantly moving from side to side on the rear seat to make the boat level from side to side (due to passengers sitting in different places and the dog moving all over the place).

Seats with backs are certainly more comfortable. I've come back with a sore back on many occasions of all day boating. They just didn't seem to work for us, but it drives me up the all for the boat to be lower on one side than the other.

I got started in boating with a deep-V hull. Then a semi-V and now another semi-V and the Sport so I'm quite accustomed to the boat sitting or running a little off level.

The seats were installed today and I'm very pleased with the result. They improve the appearance and utility of the old Sport considerably. They were easily installed with a bit of careful measuring to insure they could rotate with no interference.

Additional hardware required were 12 each 1/4 20 x 2 inch SS machine screws, fender washers, lock washers and nylock nuts. To attach the fourth seat mount to the pedestal I'll use four each 1/4 20 X 1 !/2 inch machine screws, fender washers, lock washers and nylock nuts. I know lock washers and nylock nuts are overkill but that's me.

I mounted the two rear thwart seats toward the rear of the thwart and the forward thwart seat near the front of the thwart. This will allow for considerable legroom and storage area between the thwarts.

Next up will be some SS rod holders. I'd like to have four rod holders but have not yet decided on a location. Any recommendations are welcome.

I believe the final items will be a replacement rubrail, new navlight wiring and a new navlight. Then it's off to the races with the cosmetic issues.
