I am in the beginning stages of looking to power (bought w/out engine) my 86 Montauk. I have come across a 1994 112hp Johnson (non VRO) which appears to be in good condition, compression etc.. Does anyone have hands on experience with a 112hp that can let me know it's reliability record? I was originally looking for a mid 1990's outboard in the 90 - 115hp range and think this may fit the ticket well. I know the boat is rated for 100hp but I just cant find a decent 90 - 100. Thoughts?

Also, isn't it the 20inch shaft I need on a Montauk? Thanks.

Yes, the 20" is what you need. If you're going through the cost and effort to install guages and a motor, it might be worth buying a new 90hp. That way you'll have a warranty and be within the recommended hp, plus a 90 will weigh less, too. At this time of year you may be able to swing a good deal on a new leftover engine. Good luck.
