Finally put some hours on the new 4-stroke and ran it for a top speed run. Touched 40 knots on the Garmin 162 at 5100 RPM turning a 19" Ballistic. Trimmed all the way out and no porpoising. The previous 75 Merc 2-stroke ran the same prop, w/Doel-fin (gear ratio 2.31 then, now 2.07) at 5600RPM at 34.5 knots. Does gear ratio make that much difference? If you do the math with RPM, pitch, and gear ratios, it doesn't really add up.I now need a 17" prop(or 16"?), as initially recommended by dealer. Am told the Merc 90 4-stroke really needs to run in the upper RPM range for best performance (as all motors). Can't wait to try the 17" Ballistic. My Alert is escentially a Montauk, just with thicker glass and a modified higher Montauk console. Anyone else out there with the same or similar set-up?
