I have a 1984 Standard Whaler with a 1998 90 Johnson. The boat has been converted into a center console (prior to my ownership). It has a 27-gallon gas tank located about 2 feet from the stern of the boat. The tank is about 6-feet wide 1-foot high, 2-feet long and sits horizontally port to starboard). How would the boat ride diffently if I removed that tank and installed a new one under the pivot seat (I see most Whalers set up this way)? I like the storage space under the seat, but if moving the tank makes a big ride different; I would be willing to make the move. Also how much do the Whaler pivot seats run? Are they worth the money or should I buy an after market one? I would like to replace with the Whaler parts, but if I replace the pivot seat, tank and console with Whaler parts, we are talking a big check for a 15-year-old boat. If there are any vendors who make quality after market parts at a cheaper price I would like to know about them (I hope the purist do not get mad).

I am also looking at replacing my center console. I think the Montauk console kit costs over $2000. Has anyone found any complete consoles that fit the 17 Whaler well, are cheaper and have good quality?

Thanks for your input,

C Conrad

I have 17' Montauk. Is the hull configuration the same as the standard ?
If so I question whether moving a 6 foot wide
tank forward would be feasible. The beam of the boat is only a few inches wider than than 6 feet. There'd be no passage way around the tank. The pivot seat would not accomodate a six foot wide tank underneath.

Conrad, spacemkr.com is right there in Jaxsonville. they have very nice consoles and seats. I have one in my 1996 standard and I like it better than the original. Dennis

Thanks for the replies,

I was planning on replacing (not moving) the current tank, with an under-the-seat style tank. Will this improve the ride of the boat significantly? I like the tank where it is now, but I think it makes the boat back heavy.

I saw the Spacemaker company at the Jacksonville boat show. What size console did you put in your standard? What options did you get? How long did it take to install? How much can I expect to pay?

Thanks,

C Conrad
