I dont have one yet but I want one real bad. How do you like it? Expensive? Hard to install? Do you have yours hooked up to a chart plotter?

tom; I finished puting it on last weekend and was going to commission it this weekend ? but too stormy to go out. next sat. I hope. as far as the installation that was very easy. simrad's manual is very easy to read. any one could do it step by step.
yes I have mine hooked to a SI-tex NAVADD 1000 w/a HG7 gps.thats why I wanted a autopilot.for the trips off shore, and tuna fishing ( pulling jigs ).
the cost ? let me say you can get a AP12 for about $902.00 this is a flush mount. the AP14 cost about $1072.00 this is a hand held unit with a dash mount bracket. one more thing! the ( H ) after the AP14H stands for hydraulic.
I also put a 1.7 teleflex (H) steering system on the same time as the autopilot. you may try puttind a hydraulic system on first. but not nessary, for a autopilot.they also have AP14R or AP12R this a Rotary drive system.

Thanks Kim. Let me know how it works. I am recovering from a new furuno and new hydraulic steering but I hope to have an autopilot before tuna time. Did you get remote steering?

I installed a "Sport Pilot" on my 21 outrage 5 or 6 years ago. It is a hoot! I can run two downriggers with 4 rods by myself. No more circling over my lines. No more waiting at the dock at 4:30 for the other guy. When I first installed it,I plugged in a bouy waypoint 30 miles out. The setup took me within 30 feet. There are many other advantages. One thing does occur. Looking back on my wake,I am wagging. I assume my GPS signal is communicating the wag. My GPS is an older APELCO handheld on a base. It could be the Sportpilot, don't know. It is hooked to hydraulic steering.Does anybody else wag? Regardless,it is a great luxury.

Orca when you say wag do you mean kinda like a zig-zag at slower speeds? I say this because I was on a party boat tuna fishing last year and at trolling speed we were zig zagging. I thought the captain planned it that way.

Tom, No. My autopilot has a control for speed. It apparently tells the electronics how often to adjust to the compass input. At speed,40 mph, I can look back on my wake and see a snake like pattern. It is very symetrical. I assume that it is the autopilot reacting to constant corrections. On a long run it would lower the efficiency that I would like it to provide. You Ocean guys on long runs should benefit from proper accurracy. I'm thinking it is the nature of the quality or state of the art. I'll be curious to hear what you witness.

Orca; I went out yersterday the simrad AP14H worked very well!
but going down swell I had to encrease(s/p) the gain. dose your a/p have a gain setting? at top / or fast speed the gain setting would be very low. as i see in the simrad book some (s ing) is normal, but should not be excessive.
O BTW got my limit (10) fish in 2 hrs. one was 9&1/4 lb 25 inch red snapper others 2 to 5 lb.range.
