I am considering purchasing a rebuilt 90 OMC. The shop takes care of our(meaning inlaws)other(non Whaler) boats, and is on the lake that we frequent, but not as frequently as we would like. The owner has always been helpful and responsive, and I feel that he would stand behind his product. I get the impression that he rebuilds motors in the winter since the water is usually down in the winter and tends to on lake business in the summer. The process would probably be painless since I could drop the boat off and just have it there the next time we went to the lake. My question is, what experiences or thoughts does anybody have about rebuilt motors? Eventually I would like a new 4 stroke, but I think the options will be much better in about 4 or 5 years. My old 70 hp Johnson could probably be fine with a little work, but things like no power tilt and trim make me reluctant to spend much on the motor and I do not have the time or place to perform the work myself, even if I thought I could. Besides, I want to use the boat now! Well, what do you think. I will probably get a price on friday.,

Take a compression, check the lower unit fluid and run the motor to see if it gets hot. Ask him what was replaced. Did he do a complete rebuild with bearings, pistons, etc? Or, did he just clean up the cylinders and slap on new compression rings. Ask other rebuild owners and see if their motor is still running and how many hours they put on them. If all checks out, you will be very happy with the performance. I have a buddy with a 90 and the boat jams and has a level profile. |

I think it is a complete rebuild with bearings and the whole works. I will find out. Kelly |
