I had an OR 18 back in the early 80s with OMC 150. I loved the boat, but it was capable of more speed than I wanted and too thirsty.

Now I am going to buy another '80s OR 18. The 4 stroke 70 on my Montauk has spoiled me for 2 stroke engines forever, so I am looking at repowering or finding one with 4 stroke power on it.

I have located one with a Honda 90 for $14K, and others with 2 stroke power from $9K to $12K. I have also located used and new 90, 115 and 130 Hondas for $6K to $8K. I haven't found any used 115 Yamahas, Mercs or Suzukis, but would consider them at the right price.

Who has experience with Outrage 18 and 4 strokes? Is 90 enough to run, say, 40 at WOT or do I need to go bigger?

Your experience and suggestions are welcome.

JB, try this formula for max. speed! Take the square root of the hp/gross weight and multiply by 180. This will give you the theoretical top speed assuming engine actually puts out advertised hp and properly set up engine, correct prop, clean hull, good fuel.... etc, etc.. Happy Whalin'... Clark... Thanks, Clark. I hadn't seen that one before, but it works for boats I have or have had, so I think 90 would be marginal, but 115 or 130 both fit my wants very nicely.

There are a pair of 115 yamaha 4 strokes for sale in the south florida boat trader. If you want I will search for the number. I think that the yamaha 4 stroke 115 would be a better choice considering the power to weight ratio. The 115 2 stroke is almost the same weight and I have seen a number of posts on 115's on an 18'.

Ps. I also have an 18' outrage and am repowering with probably another 150 OMC I just can't go down in hp yet!

George,
Where do you go Whalering where you can run over 45 mph? On LI sound, I barely ever run more than 22 knots, and even moreso at 16 knots- about my minimum planing speed. Seems to me 115 hp would be ideal for most needs- probably tops out around 35 mph- not too shabby in my book unless you're a speed demon. I have 150 now, and wouldn't have to think twice about 115 hp.

I repowered my '88 Outrage with a 4 stroke Honda 130 last winter (finally blew-up my Johnson 150) and couldn't be more pleased. The only minus is the extra weight, but not a big problem. I get about 44 mph WOT, but from everything I've read a 115 HP will get you pretty close if you go with a 4 stroke that weighs less (Suzuki, etc). Wouldn't go with anything less than 115 though. Good luck.

Thanks, STAMP. I had pretty much made up my mind to go with a Honda 115 or 130 or the Yammy 115 until I got a look at the specs on the new Suzi 140 (about 400#!!). Now I am confused again. I hope I can $tick to the u$ed market.

My need to be the meanest S.O.B. in the valley went away sometime between prostate cancer and my third heart attack. I would be quite happy with a 35mph cruise and 40 WOT.

I will keep the thread advised of any new developments.

Sorry, I was busy this weekend, but today I will look for the add for the 115 yamaha's.

P.S. I do most of my whalering in south Florida where you need all the power you can get in this overpowered area.

JB, I found that add for the 115 yamaha's in Florida. The trader is a few weeks old now but you never know. The # is 561-582-9015. It looks as if they are at a dealer in palm beach area. I didn't think there was much weight difference between the 2 stroke 130 and thier 4 stroke 115. Well anyway, Good luck.

P.S. I'm still on the fence about my repowering situation.

Thanks, George, I'll follow it up. I may be close to buying my OR18.
