My 1998 75 HP 2 Stroke (on a 17' standard)is supposed to turn 5200 RPM at WOT. It turns 6,100 according to the tach. I called the local merc. dealer and they said it is probably the propeller. I have a 13X22 stainless "turbo prop"that came with the boat. The dealer recommends a 24" pitch and said they have a Laser II they will give me for 379 plus tax. I would like to hear some thoughts on this before I spend the money. Thanks.

First I would verify that the tach is correct. 1000 RPM over max is way too much! Also, check RPM/Speed/prop specs using threads on this forum.
I would think the dealer could connect his test tach to your engine in a test tank and verify the tach readings.

For what it's worth, the Whaler factory rigging sheet for the 17 Standard and a Merc 75 2/stk calls for a 12.75X21 prop with the engine mounted up 1 hole.
I agree with Jim and would have the tach checked.

6100 on a 22" never. Maybe on a 13'. Get that tach checked.
