Just purchased a 16' classic bare bones hull and thought I would go with dual thwart seating and tiller steered 4 stroke until I can afford a center console. Looking at a Mercury 60 (236 lbs) but I don't know if thats overkill for a tiller or underkill if and when I add a center console??? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Strictly speaking, the maximum horsepower rating for a tiller steer motor on a 16/17 is 50 h.p.

I would think a 60 would be fine either way.

ditto! the 60 should be fine when you convert it, some here love their 50's and I am tickled about my 70 so 60 should be fine.

Thanks for the input, now I just need to fix my trailer, so I can sand the boat, so I can repaint, so I can bolt the motor on... well ya'll know how it goes. rb

There is a 50hp Merc tiller 4 stroke on E-Bay.

I wouldn't suggest running that 60hp merc at full trottle with a tiller. Maybe in the calm but in heavy chop its like holding 6 rottweilers by there leash while a cat strolls by...well maybe not that bad but it gets pretty bad above 30mph in the rough. Exspecially when it comes to flat bottom boats. Been there done that.-EasyE
