For anyone buying a Yamaha 40HP 4-stroke, here is what might be some helpful info when selecting a prop:

I tried a 10-1/4" x 15 Stainless prop, which was too much prop. Could only get 4600 RPM out of it and very slow at the start.

Next was a 10-5/8" x 12 Aluminum prop, which was not enough prop. Very quick out of the hole, but I could reach 6000 PM at 2/3 throttle.

Finally got a 10-1/4" x 14 Aluminum. This prop is absolutely perfect. I get very good performance from the start and I max out full throttle at 5700 RPM.

Happy Prop Hunting!
