I have recently bought a 40 Johnson with what appears to be a stainless prop. However, a magnet tells me it must be an alloy. The motor was outside, in the weather, for two years an no sign of rust on the prop. Is the prop a stainless alloy?

Chances are that the prop is either aluminum or stainless. Not all stainless is anti magnetic. A magnet would not react to aluminum so I would guess you have a stainless prop.
