88 spl evinrude, tilt seems ok but trim seems to now take forever and a bit grinder sound than usuall. Is this a change fluid thing and if so, can it be done by self?

yes but it is either low fluid or motor going south. OMC's take ATF. Just open screw and put ATF in(if low) with a oil squirter like the tin man had.

Bigshot, I hope you mean the "title trim" motor, not the motor of the boat?

When you add ATF make sure that you use the same brand of ATF that is currently in the unit. If you do not know I would drain the unit and refill with fresh ATF of the appropriate brand. I dont own an OMC so I cannot tell you which type of ATF to use. I do know that my Nissan manual is very specific about not mixing ATF brands.

Don't worry about mixing atf's....the stuff is old, etc. Some you have to pull the engine to drain it. Just undo the screw and see if atf dribbles out, if not squirt some in till it does.
