new Mercury engine (25hp) leaking oil

I just brought home my new (to me anyway) '69 Whaler. I equipped it with a new 2003 Mercury 25 hp 2 stroke engine. I took it out for two hours last night to break the engine in and noticed this morning that their was a fair amount of oil (1/4 cup?) leaking out near the prop. Coyld anyone tell me if this is normal for a new engine? I thought it might be just extra lube, etc. but I'm not sure. Please excuse my outboard ignorance but this is my first motorboat.

Wendy, if engine is on break-in diet of oil (25:1) this could be the cause... if so check after you get on a 50:1 ratio... should be ok! Happy Whalin'... Clark.. SCN

What color is the oil? Yellowish color could indicate a lower unit leak. Dark color would most likely be attributed to the heavy breakin mixture as Clark mentioned.

Clark and Ron,
It is a dark color oil so I suspect you are right, it's a break in type of thing. Thanks for easing my mind. Have a great day!

Dark is usually just exhaust muck. You'll need to bring it in for the 20 hour checkup(you must) so they will change your lower unit oil then and advise of any problems etc. it is still under warranty so don't worry but if you fail to have the 20 hour done, you will most likely void the warranty.
