I am in the market for a new kicker for my Guardian 17'. A 5 or 6 hp would be fine for my needs, trolling on various lakes in the north east. Of the models I've researched the Honda 5 hp seems to be by far the lightest at about 60lbs. The others compare at aprox. 80lbs. Does anyone have any opinions on what the best 4 stroke 5 or 6hp motor is considering weight, cost and reliability?

The honda is a single cyl I believe which answers why it is lighter. I would also look into Tohatsu/nissan 4 strokes. The merc is also a nice unit and very close in comparison to Tohatsu & Yamaha. Merc 5hp 2 strokes are made by Tohatsu(used to be made by yamaha) so do not think they are second tier engines. the Hondas are an over valued 5hp that is noisy compared to the others. Now I do not know about 2003 models.

gnr,
I just put a Yamaha T8, 8hp 4 stroke hi- thrust kicker on my Montauk. I'm still breaking it in, motor has 5 hrs on it. Runs very smooth at all speeds. I'm very happy with it. In gear it pushes the boat about 1 mph. At full throttle the other day with 2 foot waves 7.5 to 8mph. Speeds were measured with GPS. Montauk handles the weight no problem.
