Has anyone had experience with a 60 hp Merc 4 stroke on an older 17 Montauk? Do not wish to increase the weight beyond the 250 lbs 60 on the transom becaue I am carrying an 8 hp plus a bait tank. Will it water ski? What top/ cruising speed can I expect?

I have a carbed Merc 60 four stroke on my Montauk. Usually run about 34mph at 5800 WOT with my family aboard. We don't ski but my older son (160 lbs) wakeboards and the combo works fine.

Thanks for the input Jeff. What elevation do you run at? What is a comfortable cruising speed at what RPM? I currently have a 98 Merc 100 2 stroke and do not like the handling because of the 350# of weight plus a 8 hp "rude" kicker on my 79 Montauk.
I had run a 1979 90 merc for 19 yrs with no problems and at 290 lbs boat handled much better and sat higher in the water. Now it porpoises and digs in too deep on turns and am looking to make a change. Thanks JCL

JCL I think you may find that once you put the 4 stroke on the transom you will no longer need a kicker.the 4 strokes shine at trolling speeds with no smoke and will most likely be quieter too!

how are those merc 60 four strokes anyway and what do they weigh?
