Author Topic:   Experience with Yamaha F115?

I'm in the market for a replacement motor and am trying to decide whether to go for a 2nd hand Yamaha F115 EFI 4-stroke or a new carbureted 2-stroke (probably Yamaha or Johnson) - the prices are similar.

The 2nd-hand F115 is ex commercial, has about 850 hours, but is only a year old. It looks good. I'm looking for opinions about whether this motor is likely to be significantly worn, and what sort of service I might see from it - I'd probably only put about 50-100 hours a year on it.

Does anyone have much experience with these motors? Is there any known fault I should look for? What would be good / fair / poor compression readings? Any advice would be gratefully received....

Thanks

I would go with the new engine! 850 hours is a lot, it would take you 10 years to put that on an engine.

What thebone12 said-

My Evinrude 225 2-S (1992) had 180 hours when I bought it with an Outrage 22 three years ago - it now has 650 hours or 170 hours per year while I've owned it. Admittedly I have to haul it 60 miles or more anytime I use it and it is stored in the wintertime, but the comparison still tells me that 850 hours in one year is big.

Do you really mean carbeurated in regards the 2-strokes, or did you mean fuel-injected?

Having been on several of the same model 18 ft flats boats, some rigged with Yamaha F115, Yamaha 115 2 stroke, Yamaha 130 2 stroke, Yamaha 150 HPDI, and a Johnson 130,
I can only comment that the Yamaha 115 2 stroke and the Johnson 130 were the best performance for the weight of the engine and the cost of the engine.

I would prefer the Yamaha F115 but if it similar in price with 850 hours to a NEW 2 stroke....no brainer, get the new engine. That 115 should be about 4k or less with that use.

The longevity of 4-stroke outboards is still being determined. At 850 hours who can say where you are on the curve. Maybe it lasts 2,000 hours; maybe it lasts 1,000 hours.

I'd lean toward the new engine.

I would go with the new engine however, you didn't tell us the price of the Yamaha. If it's a real steal, maybe I would consider it.

My old boat had the Yamaha F115 on it and I loved it. I currently have twin Honda 115s and they're great too. Having said that, if you expect to have the motor you buy for ten or fifteen years, I'd wait for a deal on a new Honda or Yamaha 115. The deals are out there - especially if you can buy your motor from a boat manufacturer that buys the motors with an OEM discount. They can (and do) often retail new motors at below regular dealer cost. Just my .02.

Thanks for all the replies. I came to the same conclusion, and am now the happy owner of an "old technology" but brand new 115 2 stroke Yamaha. Only 8 hours so far but enjoying it immensely!

I just sold my Pursuit 1850 to buy a BW 20-Outrage. The 1850 had a Yahama 115 which was in salt H20 for 12 years only to be taken out once yearly for plugs and lower unit oil. Flawless, always started, never a problem and easy to sell down the road. My 20 outrage has a Yam 200 and I expect the same great service. Good Choice!!!!
