In the latest Trailer Boats Mag, they tested a 24' outrage with a Merc 225 hp 4s, and one with twin 135 optimi (plural of optimax).
Guess which setup had better performance and a longer cruising range.

Hint...it wasn't the 225.

That doesn't seem to me to be surprising. 270 DFI horses should outperform 225 4-stroke horses, especially on such a heavy boat. The questions I have are: 1) how does the cost of purchase, extended warranty and rigging of the two options compare?; and 2) which option will stand up better to the test of time.
A more interesting comparison would be between two 115 two strokes or DFI two-strokes.

A pair of 135 Merc Opti's is about $18,000., bought right. I have heard the Yamaha built 4-stroke is about $15,000?

I still think that twins are double trouble! I also dont think that a 250 hpdi from yamaha would get beat as bad! I would still go with the 250 single over it.

I don't have the magazine in front of me, but I think the price difference was about 10K more for the twins.
I was not surprised at the performance difference, but the fuel efficiency was interesting. The twins were more miserly throughout most of the mid range RPMs.
Speed at best cruise RPM's was around 29 mph for the 225, and 26 mph for the twins.

How could they do a comparo like that. Gee will 270 hp perform better than 225? Most twin 115's will outperform a single 225 in midrange.

the 135s are detuned 150s anyway! The weight difference is big, I wonder how the optimax 225 compared!
