I'm considering buying a good used 90 hp., 1999 Mercury outboard to repower my 17' Whaler. The boat is early '70s vintage. Someone cautioned me to be sure the shaft length of the motor would be appropriate for this boat. Can you elaborate? What should I be looking for?

I believe the recommended engine shaft length for any 17' has always been 20".
