Yamaha 50 hp High Thrust

I'm in the process of repowering my '71 Katama (between heart attacks at the prices). I'm not interested in top end...no waterskiing or wakeboarding, just salmon trolling in relatively lumpy seas off Bodega Bay 60 miles north of San Francisco, and 20 mph tops cruising speed. My boat came with an ancient Evinrude 50 hp(plus extra added attraction--the electric push-button shifter, lucky me). That motor runs sweet, starts right up, but I'm nervous about it, and me, making it thru the season. A local shop is offering to set me up with a 50 hp Yamaha 4-stroke "High Thrust" for $6k and change, installed with controls and combo tack/hour meter. Yamaha promotes this motor as perfect for pontoon boats and as a kicker for big sailboats; what do you folks think about it for my old 16/17, and what about that price?

Elaelap, I toted around for a season with a 40 on my 17 then upgraded to a 90, you may want to consider a Suzuki 70 4 stroke. I think I know of the dealer you are talking about, and I bet he could get you one of those. Haggle with him. I worry a little about the reliability of the TLDI/Optimax/Ficht/HPDI systems so I would say stick with a 4 stroke. Either way, still plenty of time until April 12th, so take your time and search all over the place. I had considered myself happy with the 40, but when I got the 90, I realized I was only fooling myself. I know that sloppy slappy stuff you talk about, it is the kind of stuff you find rounding the head when going north. You will be much happier with more horses going through that, simply because it is much easier to crunch through the stuff without loosing momentum. I too cruise at 18-22 mph, but on dead flat days, you still have the option to open it up and save some time.

That's roughly what my dad paid for that exact engine when he bought his in 2001. His is mounted on a 31' Drift-r-cruz Houseboat, spinning a 10" or 12" pitch prop (non-planing hull). It starts great, purrs when running (especially in comparison to the 2 cylinder OMC 50Hp he previously had, 1974 model). The inline 4 cylinder is much smoother than the 2 cylinder you're replacing, and you'll love the quiet. Horsepower being the same, your performance should be maintained, and the Bigfoot lower unit should allow you to run a prop similar to what you're running now.
Should be what you're looking for, and the price is about "fair" for the engine assuming it's new. Ask the dealer when the next boat show is, so you can get them to toss in an extended warranty. Yamaha likes to toss in extra warranties for dealers attending shows. If you can hold out through the show date, you get the warranty as a bonus for waiting. If you buy today, you get to use the boat sooner... Hmmm, that's the tougher decision.

I am running a Merc 50 4stk with the standard lower unit on my Montauk.
With a Merc Tropy Sport 4 blade ss prop I max out at 33 mph, running weight is around 1700#. Hole shot is great.
I don't think you will get that kind of performance with a high thrust/big foot lower unit. I would shop for a motor with the standard lower unit.
