Has anybody tried a classic 125 hp mercury on a montauk. Seems like it would be a good engine for those wanting more power weighing in at only 347lbs, alot less than some of the four strokes going on these boats. It's also a 4 cylinder which would be smoother running than the three cylinder motors.

Dennis, I have driven a 17 with the 125hp Merc and it really "lights up" at top end... don't know how fast but faster than I want to go! Weight is not a problem and handling is identical to 17 with 100hp four cyl merc.(same engine as the 125, basically). One word of caution... this 4 cyl enging idles on two cyls (two carbs don't have low speed jets, only an orifice to allow oiling at idle) and the second set of carbs comes on like gangbusters at about 1800-2000rpm (when high speed jet cuts in) and will throw you out of the boat if not expecting it!!! Hey, I checked your new digs at Mexico Beach back in Oct. but never when you were there!!! Happy Whalin'.. Clark.. SCN
