As part of my repower of my Montauk, I have obtained a 9" setback bracket from Stainless Marine. I mounted my new engine (2002 90HP Johnson 2S) as low as I could mount it on the setback bracket. The cavitation plate is between 2 1/2" and 3" above the bottom of the transom. I wrote to Stainless Marine and they say that's perfect. I have been reading the different threads on engine height and I know Clark Roberts has lots of experience with setback brackets. So, Clark or anyone else, does this seem OK? Will I need to buy a new prop or Doel fin? Should I just go out and test drive?

Go out and test drive, you will probably raise it after you do. I have a 6" setback and I am about 1.5" above my drain plug and about 6" off the transom and she rides totally normal.

I have a power jack plate and can run with it set at the top if I have to. I just got a new Powertech 4 blade RXB4 15 pitch to run on my 90 yamaha, should give me good hole shot with motor raised up. Also blocked off the top inch of the water intakes with JB weld. My experienc is with a 6" setback but with the 9" setback you will be able to raise it higher. Have fun!

With that setup, strongly recommend you buy a surface piercing prop, such as an OMC Raker, Merc Laser II or Stilleto. Performance and hull lift should be terrific.

If you havenít done so already, make sure you have one or more water pressure gauges hooked up to the motor before you test drive. I talked to a Tech at Bobís Machine Shop, and they recommended using at least one gauge in the head or two if itís a V4 or V6. One gauge will help determine if you have water pressure. Two gauges on the V models let know you have water pressure and help identify a blockage in one bank or the other.

Gauges are cheaper than motors
