I have a 90 hp on my newly aquired 17' Outrage II and I need prop, planing help.
I have heard that 4 strokes take a while to wind out on hole shot but mine seems to take a really long time. I understand that 90hp is at the bottom of the HP scale for this boat, but any suggestions on a good compromise hole shot/top end prop for this combo would be appreciated. Thx

What rpm does it hit at WOT? If you are getting max rpms, then there is little you can do for holeshot except add HP. Since this is not an option, once we figure out the prop, you may want to try a doel-fin or trim tabs(my choice).

What size prop do you have on it right now? I have the same motor on my 16' Dauntless. The 17' Outrage is about a foot longer and 200 lbs heaver but both boats have very similar Accutrack hulls. I've tried a variety of props and found that my 13 3/4" 15 pitch Solas prop gives my the best combination of hloe shot and top end. The Honda 16 pitch prop is cupped and gives me 40 mph at 6000 rpm under light load but hole shot suffers a little. The 15 pitch Solas gets to 6200 rpm and 38 mph under light load but hole shot is great. E-mail me for more specifics.

What is redline?

Forgot to mention that both props are stainless steel. The Solas is lghtly cupped and the Honda prop is a cupped performance prop with vent holes. Bigshot, redline for the Honda 90 is 6000 but I propped it to reach 6200 under light load. The manual says motor can be run at up to 6200 rpms for brief periods without causing any damage.

A good friend of mine bought a new Montauk with a 90 Evinrude FICHT last year.
He comes out of the hole like a rocket shot him out, his top end is real close to 50 mph, this I know because I clocked him right along side of me, gps, speedo & sonar [ all within 1 - 2 mph of each other ].
I don't know which prop he's twisting, but could find out.
Doubt if the 4 stroke has the umph as the Evinrude though.
