A friend of ours had an older 13 with a short shaft 50 on it (shaft must be 15" with the older cutaway transom). He had to be careful when it was rough and windy. The motor was trimmed down in the chop-when under way and when punching out of the hole.
With a tailwind and some light chop, it was fun to open it up with the motor trimmed not much more than a level setting.
This rig was also great getting up on plane with heavier loads.
In short, it's a fun combo.

If the merc is a 20" shaft you can use a jackplate to mount the engine higher to fit.

2 piece manual plates are available everywhere. Try E-Bay. get a 4-6" setback with at least 4" lift. Under $150 is good.

what do you do about the curve in the transom when you mount a jackplate thanks

jackplate mounts just like an engine so whatever you would do for the engine, do for the jackplate(wedges, etc). If transom is iffy, then do not even think about 50hp. If transom is solid then it should not need any reinforcemnt with or without a plate.

when i mounted the 35 i drilled into the transom to mount the motor and the wood shaveings that came out were nice and solid. is ther any other test i can do to test the transom? thank you

I am also going to put a CMC jackplate with the 55 rude on my sourpuss. I believe the engine weights around 220 pounds and I need to put a jackplate on. What can I do to reinforce the transom. <NOTE> I am working with a professional boat builder who do whatever. Any suggestions? Do you think it could hold 250 lbs if reinforced? Thanks for the help guys!

Old 55hp OMC's if 3cyl will be too heavy. The 2cyl weighs about 180 so it will be fine.
