Lookig at a 1991 17'outrage with a blowed up moto. how do you think it would do with my 70 evinrude 4 stroke? The hull weighs only 120lbs more but v is deeper with 4" more draft than the montauk. Who owns one and what does she do with your hp?

Big shot, I don't have experience with the 17' by do with the 18' outrage & I doubt the 70 will do it any justic. The 18' OR gets up & gos with a 150 hp which is twice the hp, plus 10 more ponies then your 70. The 17' OR is only 1 ft shorter. I just don't feel 60% less hp is gonna get it done or even be close to what she needs. Sal |

BIGSHOT, I have a 1992 17OR with a 115 Johnson. It really seams to handle nicely. I have only had it seince December so I am no authority on it but I would say a 70 hp would not be enuff. It is like all WHalers a solid boat as you know and it takes a little more than the thinner skinned boats. I would say getting below a 90 and you would regret it. I already am contimplating a 130 when my motor starts to act up more than I can take. By the way for speed I am getting 42-45 MPH. Good luck and sorry to read about the demise of your other boat. A similar event took place to my 13 FT'r when I was a kid. But it happened whlie it was stolen. Brendan |

I have a 1994 Outrage with a 90hp Johnson. It jumps on plane in about 2 seconds, and runs 40.5-42mph at WOT. I think a 70 hp would be enough to provide *acceptable* performance, but the extra weight of the four stroke will hurt a little. Whaler says 50hp is the minimum on that boat. I'd say it'll work OK...but don't plan on waterskiing behind it. |

I scrapped the idea and put a deposit on a newtauk. thanks for the info, I bet she would have been a 35+mph machine which is kinda lame. |
