I felt I was in need of a better hole shot so I bought a new prop. I used to run a ss 13.25 x 16 double-cupped prop. I got to 5900 rpm (6000 is max) and 40.1 mph. The new prop is a ss 13.75 x 15 single cupped. I get 38 mph at 6150 rpm. Now the hole shot is great and I try not to go over 6000 rpm but I was wondering if it will do harm to my motor if I run over the max rpm's for brief peroids of time.

By accident you will be ok but even brief periods of time over years will do damage. My bud had a 200 merc and he thought redline ws 6k but actually it was like 5750 and after 2 seasons of hard use she delaminated a cyl wall from excessive heat from over reving. The engine did not grenade but cyl walls were shot.
