No owner's manual is available. What is the wide-open throttle RPM range for a 1994 Johnson 225?

The motor now has a 19" propeller which hits 5,100 RPM's with a light load. Shouldn't the engine be toward the upper end of its WOT RPM range with a light load? Would dropping to a 17" propeller do the trick?

Yes. My 225 will hit 6k with 1/8 tank and 2 people and a t-top. This gets her just over 50mph with a 19" SST. With 4 people and a full tank I can still swing 5500 or more. Drop to a 17".

I swing an OMC stainless 14x19 on my '92 Evenrude 225; it has turned 53 MPH (GPS) at 5600 RPM under ideal conditions on my Outrage 22. I'm not sure what model the prop is, but it is cupped and raked to some degree or another; it is a real project to get it to slip by trimming up. I would agree that a 17 would probably be the ticket for your 24.

OMC rates the max RPM range at 5k to 6k, like Bigshot says; the horsepower is rated at 5500 RPM.

PM, a 17p will only get you 5,500 rpms.
What holes is the engine mounted on ?,....please don't tell me all the way down.
If so, raise that puppy up 2 holes,...should get you close to 6,000 rpms.

Of course, the engine is mounted all the way down. It's going to be moved up to the third set of holes. I don't know why the engines are mounted so low by the dealers, as it impacts performance negatively.

The 17" Viper propeller is going to be installed at the same time. That should allow the engine to run properly.

I won't be on the boat until mid to late July, so I'll have to wait and see...

Sal, What is the deal with the mounting holes. Do all outboards need to be raised into upper holes? I have a 97 Outrage 21 and the engine is also mounted all the way down. What does raising the engine do and how should it affect the performance? What is the easiest way to do it? can one just use the engine trim to help lift it on bare ground? It looks like the easiest way to me but I am a farmer and we just "get by" with a lot of stuff. Thanks Dave

I'm sure Sal has done this more than I have, but I raised my engine one hole today while the boat was trailered. Used a bottle jack and 4 x 4 (if you are a farmer I know you have one), took the top bolts out and slightly loosened the bottom bolts. I jacked it up while my son steadied things until it was right and put the top bolts back in. Pretty easy and it only took about 20 minutes.

Another simple way to do this is to do all the loosening of the motor re: tomroe's post, but rather than raising the motor up with a seperate jack, lower the trailer tongue as far as it will go (wheels firmlay chocked), place solid blocking under the motor skeg with the motor trimmed as close to vertically as possible, and then the motor can be raised against its blocking by cranking up the trailer tongue jack.

dboy, by raising the engine higher on the transom, you really cut back the poroising & allow the engine to gain sometimes 3 - 4 hundred rpms, thus allowing you to use a prop with more pitch , thus more speed & a much better ride.
Pmucciolo, The OMC Viper "isn't" one of my favorite props, it's better then the regular omc prop because it's a performance prop, but I would have gone with a Stiletto because the Stiletto will raise the whole boat "up" while running & costs 1/2 of what the Viper will.
If you live close to SF i'm only 35 miles away & could let you try one of my Stilettos before buying the Viper.
I don't have a 17p but just to see how a 14.25 x 19p would handle the boat.
If i'm not mistaken I think the Viper comes in 15" diameter, not 14 or 14./25

One more thing, you want that engine to reach 6,000 rpms cause the last 1,000 rpms is where all the speed is.
Yes all engines reach their hp at a certain rpm like 5,500 on yours, but that last 500 is really what makes that engine & boat haul ass.

From what I've read, four-bladed propellers enhance a boat's performance in some ways, but at the expense of top-end speed. Would a four-bladed propeller be useful in this situation? If so, what size would one try first?

On which hole in the engine bracket should the engine be mounted for an Outrage 24? It's my understanding that it should be mounted on the third hole.

You have to experiment with the mounting holes, try thr 2nd set first.
I'm not overly fond of 4 blade props, but in you situation, it could help.
I feel that engine really isn't enough for that boat.
My preference would be twin 150s minimum, 200s max.

Here's an update: The 1994 Johnson 225 with a 17" OMC Viper propeller on our 1994 24' Outrage (bottom painted) with 150+ gallons of fuel, one person, Bimini top open, and a moderate amount of gear hit 5,500 RPM's WOT. That is with a stiff headwind and heavy chop on the ICW. The engine's trim did not receive fine tuning under the circumstances. GPS data is to follow, as this brief "test" was undertaken as a wicked thunderstorm approached during a dash for the marina. The motor is mounted on the third hole from the top.

The "sweet spots" (when the engine becomes quiet and the boat seems most comfortable) are at 3,700 RPM's (low cruise) and 4,300 RPM's (high cruise). These observations were made with a full 196 gallons of fuel at the beginning of the trip from downtown Jacksonville to Daytona Beach.

The boat averages about two miles per gallon full of fuel with a moderate amount of gear and one person aboard. The additional gear would easily account for the weight of a second adult, however.

P, didn't the boat ride different from before ?
It should have been lighter in the bow & rode higher on the water all the way around.
I expected more rpms by going 2": less in pitch & raising the engine 2 more holes.
I figured 5 - 600 more rpms.
Did you top end increase ?
2 mpg is good for that engine, the norm is usually about 1-1/2 per.
That engine delivers alot of power but sure isn't shy about charging you fuel wise.

The boat does run high in the water on plane and accelerates and turns without cavitation.

At 3,700 RPM's, the speed averages about 24 MPH. At 4,300 RPM's the speed averages about 30 MPH. These numbers were obtained with 3/4 fuel (150 gallons), headwind, four adults aboard, and a moderate amount of gear. I'm going to obtain some further information tomorrow.

Today provided an opportunity to test the boat with little current and light wind. The boat hit 40.2 MPH with four adults aboard and 2/3 fuel. That's quite impressive considering the massive size of her hull and deep "V" configuration.
