I have a newport 17' with a '79 100 hp johnson at wot I am turning 5200 rpm. I have no reliable speed numbers but a guess is 40 mph. I would like to get to plane a little quicker without harming top end too much is this possible? Thanks in advance.

you are close so I would leave it alone. You are probably swinging a 17" prop. Have it made into a 16" would be your cheapest route because a 15" would be too small.
