My 96' Johnson 48 HP motor has no in-line fuel filter, just the screen at the fuel pump. I have an OMC shop manual for it that shows an in-line filter. Is there any downside to putting one in?

I'm pretty sure your engine has the inline filter under the hood, just inside where the outside fuel connection, connects, it should be "UNDER" all the other hoses, right at the bottom of the pan on the starboard side of the engine about half way back.
If i'm not mistaken, you can see it from the top, gotta move hoses etc out of the way.
