Roughly how much oil should my outboard consume per tank of gas (77 gallons)? This is my first season using a 2001 Yamaha 225 Saltwater Series II (on a 22' Outrage). The engine runs great, but not knowing how much oil she should be slurping I am wondering if she is actually guzzling oil? She has consumed a couple of gallons (4?) of oil in 37 hours of operation so far this season.

The amount of oil your motor consumes will depend on how you operate your motor. At full throttle, I believe the consumption ratio is greater than 50:1 but at idle it might be something like 100:1.

Most of the operation of my Yamaha 225 is below 4000 rpm. I find that I have to add a gallon of oil about every 75 gallons of gas consumed (usually about every other fill up). During my typical 50 - 75 operating hour season, I usually consume about 6 to 8 gallons of oil.

Just recently I made several extended runs operating the motor above 4000 rpm. I noticed increased oil consumption to the point where I had to add a gallon of oil after about 50 to 60 gallons of gas consumed.

Although it depends on your operation, I believe that adding a gallon of oil for every tank (77 gallons of gas in a 22 Outrage or Revenge) would not be unusual.
