Need some help here...I am the owner of a 2000 18' O/R...as most of you know this is a very heavey 18' boat with a wide beam for a 18'

It's currently powered by a 2000 150 Merc Opti...and the boat seems to be almost underpowered with this motor. Curious if I would see some signifigant gains if I were to re-power with a 2004 200 Opti (max rating for the boat). In that my current motor has less than 20 hours on it (bought new this year) and still has 18 months of warranty I could, at this point, get a reasonable amount of money for it. The delta between the two motors would be approx $6k...what do you think...worth it or not?

Thanks

CH

Theres a big difference between the 150 & 200 hp.
That boat has alot of "V" in it & my motto is, "always put the maximum rated engine on your boats & you will be a happy camper".

Thanks Sal...so hard to quantify that "difference" and that's what I'm struggling with...

Congratulations, you are the first person I have ever heard of with an opti that is going to replace it with another one!

Why thank you, I'll spare you the acceptance speech...really has been a good performer...all 20 hours I've put on it ;-)

Ideally...I'd open up my search to other brands...but might have still ended up back with the Merc?? Really don't want to mess with switching controls, gauges (SMART by Merc) etc...it's going to be a big enough PITA just to switch engines...add in the complication of the aforementioned items and it would push it to a realm that I don't want to deal with.

You could go with an Merc EFI, I have been told that as long as the outboard is using an ECU with the numbers 555 on it , it is compatible with everything. I know that Evinrude FICHT is now an excellent motor and it wasnt just 2 years ago. Perhaps Merc Opti has done the same trnasformation during the last year and I am being stubborn for not believing it, but believe me assuming it is ok now, it wasnt ok, up until now.
