I need to replace the 1993 Johnson 125 on my 1987 Outrage, hull number BWC7076CL687. I have been looking for a Johnson 175 but can not find one for a reasonable price. I have located a good 1997 Johnson 225 Ocean Runner. What are the pros and cons of mounting this motor on an 18 Outrage? I use the boat primarily for skiing in lakes but of course I do hit the Georgia and Florida coast for an occassional fishing trip. Thanks in advance for your input.

Isn't that boat rated for 150 hp max ?
My feelings are, unless your "WELL"
aquainted with handling a "VERY" fast boat, don't even think about it.
Most people think they are qualified to run a hot boat, but their really only qualified in their heads only.
Everyone feels their the bomb & can do anything others do, but unless you have spent "LOTS & LOTS" of time behind the wheel of a hot one, your only kidding yourself & will end up hurting if not killing yourself & innocent people either in your boat or on another.
Your talking about a boat thats going to run close to 64 mph & when your going that fast, you damn well better know what your doing, "not think you know what your doing
" because you don't if you haven't been there.
My suggestion is, don't do it,.

Sal, I would not run the boat beyond 45 mph. Ideally, I prefer a 175HP but I have not been able to find one. I have redone the floor, replaced all the teak wood, and redone all the seats. I am ready for an engine and this is all I can find.

Hi, John.

That boat will do 45-50 with the correct 150hp engine.

225hp would be a 50% overpower of a very light (for 18'6"), normally fast boat.

I agree with Sal. It is just too much.

Find a 150.

Not only that....the $$$ you save you will QUICKLY spend on fuel. Those 225's are pigs.....I have one.

It'll use too much fuel and your static trim will be terrible(too much weight). You may not even be able to trim it enough to eliminate proposing! If so, you'll never reach 50mph because the boat will be all over the place, hobby-horsing along. Go with a 150 ideally or a 175 if you have to.

Actually, a 225 wouldnt be too different than a 15 with 70 on it. Or those 13's with 50's. The down side is you'll sit a bit low in the water (add hydrofoil). The plus side is you'll give the bass boats a run for their money!

Never scared

Don't agree, NS.

A 15' with 50% overpower would have a 100hp on it.
A 13' with 50% overpower would have a 60hp on it.
A 16/17' with 50% overpower would have a 150hp on it.

Scared now??

Well I have been in a 15 with a 115 and it was fun....scary but fun.

If I had a 225 laying around and a 18 fell in my lap....you can bet your bippy I would do it. If I had a 18 and needed to repower soon, I would just keep looking for that 175 carbed OMC.

John, theres no way in hell you will only run that boat to 45 mph when you know all those extra horses are sitting back there just loping along at 3/4 throttle.
The curiosity would drive you nuts until you punched it & went airborn & watch the speedo go from 45 to 60 in a flash.
Then you would be sooooo excited to show your buddies what a power house you have, then you will want everyone at the launch ramp to see how fast your boat is, then you will hit a wake that really didn't look that big & the boat came back down on it's side or nose first or just the engine hit first & threw you sideways at 60 mph & people will say, what ever happened to that guy John, you know, the guy with the real fast whaler, then someone will say, he's in the happy hunting grounds, well, parts of him are, they never found the rest of him.
Get it out of your head "UNLESS" you really do know how to handle a very fast rig.
Theres a big difference between being capable & thinking your capable of handling it, it's the thinking you are thats going to hurt you.
Do you have any idea how far it takes for that boat to come down to 5 mph from 60 mph?......well, i'll tell you, a looooooooooong looooooong time with little if any control.
I'v been there many many times & it's always different.
I just don't have a good feeling about this one because I just don't think your qualified to run that fast.
I'm not trying to be a smart ass, just giving you my gut feeling on this one.
Sal
