Author Topic:   115 Yamaha or 140 OMC for an older 16'7" hull

Just got a non smirked 16'7" commercial hull from my local DNR and I am at a crossroads as to which engine to power with. Boat came with a 140 OMC that has seen better days, but I have a nice 1986 Evinrude 140 V-4 in my shop that is ready to go. Also have a very nice late 80's Yamaha V-4 115. Both motors are in great shape. Both motors are oil injected.

I am leaning toward the OMC as the extra power is enticing. However, I do like the Yamahas oil injection system better than OMC's VRO. I am not trying to start a OMC vs. Yamaha flame. Just wanted to know what you would do and why.

Boat is for family use which includes cruising/ fishing /skiing. No younger operaters will be using this boat. Both motors are very close weight wise. Please don't tell me to buy a 70 4s suzuki or xyz 90hp as my choices are limited between these two motors at the moment. Thanks.

Whatever is easier and nicer. I would lean towards the Yamaha being they are quiet, etc. But being she is already pre-rigged for OMC and you have a correct prop(21" I hope), might be a lot easier. Install the BETTER of the two.

Thanks Bigshot, The Pre rigging means little here as all that I am working with is the Morse control and cables, all the original OMC harness, guages etc. are gone. I meant to mention that. The yamaha would definitely be quieter, so that is a plus. I thought I had the corect prop but was starting with a 19P. I cannot really decide which motor is nicer/better as both are in such similar condition. Points go to the yamaha for being quieter, better oil injection(my opinion) and I do like the yamaha analog guages. The evinrude has 25 more hp though and that could be a sleeper.
The yamaha is currently rigged on a 17' V-hull, so I will run that this weekend and see how she performs.

I wonder what the difference in performance would be between these two engines?

Not much in top end. The 115 Yammie should run a 19". There is one on E-Bay now off a 130.

That 140 is a power house compared to the 115 Yamaha.
I would dissconnect the vro & just premix.
As far as quite gos, your not running dry stacks on these engines,
Niether one of those engines is excessivly noisy so that shouldn't make much difference.
I had a 1980 - 140 Johnson on my "V"20 & it was hotter then the 1991 - 150 I changed her for.
She pushed my V20 consistent at 48 - 49 mph.
A 115 Yamaha wouldn't come close.

The cops near me have the 17 montauk with 130v4 rude on it. It sits just fine and runs great.

Thanks Sal, Capt Bone..just when I am thinking Yamaha is the way to go. Sal, I was thinking the same thing about the OMC Vro too. I know the OMC 140 is a screamer I ran it on a Baja for awhile and was impressed with its power. I have never run a Yamaha 115 but it looks identical to an omc 90 degree block. Guess this weekend will tell I will take the yamaha out and report back. I have run a yamaha 150 and the airbox seems much quieter than other 2 stroke engines. Thought the 115 yamaha would be similar. This was a DNR police boat and they powered with a 140.

Got out and ran the Yamaha 115 this weekend. Motor is smooth and has decent punch but reminds more of a 90hp OMC than a 115hp. Really nothing wrong with that but looks like my hull will get the 140hp Evinrude mounted. If she is going to carry the V-4 weight I decided I would like it to be somewhat muscled. Can't wait to get things mounted and start tweaking this package.. should be fun.
