Hello Guys (and gals?)...This looks like a great forum and I look forward to participating. I just today purchased a 1970 13' Whaler in fairly nice original condition. It has a Merc 18 hp. I have noticed in browsing this forum that some 13 footers for sale, etc. are powered with motors up to 40 hp...is this doable on this boat? If so, is a steel backing plate on the transome mount necessary?
Is there a source anywhere with a diagram on the steering system? It seems pretty straight forward but the cables are disconnected under the steering pedestal. Lastly, I have the original steering wheel but it is missing the round "horn" insert. Is there any aftermarket parts or is there a source for older parts like these for our classic whalers?
Many thanks!
JB

I am not a purist. For safety sake I would recommend going to a teleflex streering cable system. Yes, your boat can take a 40 without a plate, but where I come from, the added horsepower/speed/weight ruins the good ride that you are going to have. I would not recommend anything more than a 25, unless you are on lake with no chop.

Howdy, Hookup.

Well, I am a purist, but I agree with Jamie.

I have had 13s with 25, 40 and 50hp on them and found that the 25 is by a long shot the most pleasant boat to use.

As a (very) rough estimate you can expect a 13 with a medium load to get 1mph WOT per hp on the transom, and 25mph is pleasant in a 13. Higher speeds are scary on all but very flat water.

Red sky at night. . .

I've got a 2001 Johnson 30hp on a 1969 13' sport and think this is a great combo.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. Sounds like the way to go is a 25 or 30.
I am very interested in learning more about the teleflex steering system that Jamie has mentioned. Can this system be adapted to the stock 13' Sport setup?
Best,
JB

yes, the only problem you may encounter is that your outboard may not have a steering/tilt tube if it is very old. The solution is simple, you need to add a 'stand off bracket'. You will not believe how well this system works. Most boats with an engine smaller than 150 hp use it.
