Is a 50hp too much? That depends on who responds to your question. If you do a search of old posts you will find many discussions on the subject.

I have a 13' with a 50 Yamaha (repowered from an evinrude 48hp) and love it. Lightly loaded, trimmed all the way out at WOT it gets scary. Fully loaded to overloaded it is the only motor I would have.

I would not let unsupervised kids drive the boat. I am sure that as a kid, I would have flipped.

Good Luck

I am running a 48 spl Evinrude on my 13 sourpuss and I would not have any other motor again. The speed you have to watch and you cannot mash the throttle, but with a load of dive tanks and people or any serious wieght I can still keep up with a 12 year in his 13 with a 40 hp. You should get it and you will be welcomed in the circle of 50's! Trust me, you will never go back.
