Bob - I have a '96 17 Outrage with a 115 Johnson Ocean Runner - which is a good compromise - gets right up on plane and moves right along at 25 - 30 at 4000rpm. Therefore, you might be on the light side with the 90. Bear in mind though, I am up in the air about 5000 feet. ------ Jerry/Idaho

i have a 98 17 outrage w/ a 135 merc. itmoves nice. the max is a 150. I would be careful w/ a 90... nothing worse than not enough power.

I have a 1998 with a 150 Mercury carb. I just purchased the 150. I had a 115 saltwater that came with the boat. The 115 was a minimum for me and I wanted more speed. The Honda is heavy and underpowered for the Outrage. If a storm is coming or you want to outrun some of the new big fast boat wakes you need a minimum of 40mph. 115 would be the least I would have on my boat.

I have a 97 Outrage with a 135 Merc. Works fine -- planes quickly and has pleanty of speed. I wouldn't go below a 125. Max is 150.

Much depends on what you're using the boat for. I too have a 17 with a merc 135. Fast enough with the right prop and motor height for me to take 4 people fishing at good speed. I'm comfortable towing skiers and tubes as well. 90 HP would get the boat on plane, but might prove under powered with a full tank (53 gallons) and a full load (7 adults max). The Yamaha 150 4 stroke looks mighty inviting.
