I have a 17' Sakonnet with the original 20" 1968 85hp johnson on it . I am trying to buy (Ebay) a 20" 1997 Evinrude 90hp. I am wondering if i will have to redrill my transom? I have the standard drill pattern from what i know.I have the adjustable stern bracket clamps. Thanks Reese

The holes for the old engine should match the new one.

They should line up. My 1988 Johnson's holes matched My 2001 Merc 75hp. If they do not an alternative could be a transom bracket which many on this site use and cliam an increase in performance. There is a great article with several links in the reference section of this site regarding the use and set up of transom brackets.
