Author Topic:   Merc 75 hp oil consumption

I have a new 2001 merc 75hp 2 stroke that I bought new this spring and it has exactly 60 hours on it from this seasons use. I used appox. 4.5 gal of merc. Quick Silver Oil. for the 60 hours. This motor has a built in oil tank beneath the cowling which I belive is standard for these merc 75/90 hp.

As this is a new motor I had no idea what the oil consumption would be going into the season.

I am impressed with the amount of oil I used, yet have nothing to compare it to as my previous motor was 1988 88hp Johnson which I premixed at a 50/1 ratio and did not record usage of oil, nor had an hour meter.

Can anyone share their oil usage on a simular motor. I will continue to use the Quick Silver Oil as the overall cost was little for the 4.5 gals of oil. Appoximately $54.00 for the 4.5 gal. or about $12.00 per gal from BJ's.

I am not trying to re-hash the oil topic, rather get some feed back if my oil usage results were typical.

I've got a 2003 Yamaha 70 with just over 40 hours on it and while I don't have exact numbers I would guess that I only used about 7 quarts at most so just under 2 gallons if my math is correct and that was with Yamalube oil. Does that sound about right?

I think yamaha uses 100:1 mix ratio so that would be a poor judge of comaprison. Four and a half gallons sound about right, but a lot depends on your average engine speed. Engine burn more oil at higher rpm, but hour meter runs continuously wheather your wot or idleing.

Well if you stayed at 4k rpm constantly with a 88spl you would burn roughly 15 gallons of oil in 60 hours. being you do not run 4k constantly I would say maybe half. In 60 hours I burn roughly 6 gallons of oil in my 225 so I think you may be a tad hogh but I may also have burned 8 gallons, etc. DOes it smoke excessively? If not, don't worry. You also ran double oil for the first 10 or 20 hours.

Ps ....how much gas did you burn in that same time frame? In the same scenerio with the 88 you would have burned roughly 360 gallons of gas. If you are burning roughly 75:1 or better then injection should be good.

Bigs,

I am not sure of the fuel consumption.
