'87 Montauk w '87 OMC 90 would make 30 MPH on paddle wheel sensor. Instead of taking it to the stealer, we pulled the eng cover. 3/4 of plug wires attached = 3/4 WOT speed. Pretty simple. Good reference.

But as Paul Harvey says the real story is that the ignition seems to be OK. Thought those things were supposed to blow if plug/wire not grounded.

I use an appropriate width Ty-Wrap to secure the wire to the plug by wrapping it around the rubber boot and tightening it. This is particularly helpful on older engines where the rubber in the plug wire boot has lost some of its original elasticity.

I know that on older Yamaha engines you can run without the wire attached to the plug. Until I modified them as described above, the plug wires on my 1987 Yamaha engine were falling off all the time. I don't think their spark plug boot was particularly well-fitted to outboard engine use.

Since using the Ty-Wrap technique none have fallen off in hundreds of hours of use.

Dr H, thanks for the tip on Ty-Wrapping the ig wire boots. Thought I needed to fire myself as head mechanic and let my bride take over as a more reliable/responsible person.

Attached 4th plug wire. Testd at 42mph WOT. My formula for missing on one cylinder proves valid, at least for this example.
