I have a 1985 40 Johnson, and need a power tilt and trim. I have searched E-Bay for several months and have never seen one advertized. What other horsepower motors have the same unit, and are they hard to find?

You could also look up Steve Leone, you can do a search on the forum from him. He's out in CA and does a lot of business on Ebay. I've dealt with his several times on used items and have never had a problem. I'm sure he would either have the right part or send you in the right direction.

Good luck...

Check marine salvage yards. In St. Pete Clearwater there is Horn's and Don's. I'm sure both have what you are looking for. Also look for engines (possibly with a boat attached that could be resold) with blown powerhead. People about give these away. Lots of parts for the money.

Jiles, this was the exact reason that I got rid of my 40 HP Johnrude, 1987 model. It had the TNT option that I bought from Seals Marine in Tampa Florida (now a Key West dealer).

Anyway, when my pump puked, I tried high and low to get a new one and when that failed, got it rebuilt at a hydraulics repair facility($125.00) No sooner did I get the pump repaired than one of the shafts bent on me (it had a shaft on each side, not like the single shaft inside the new motors. The shafts are near impossible to find and if you do, they are very costly (about 200 large each). It was either pay 500 for a whole new system (the engine was only worth maybe 600-700) or get a new 50 HP for $1800 when OMC went belly up. I went to iboats.com, found a 2000 50 HP two stroker and its flies, is a bit lighter (about 15 pounds than the old one) and has a sleeker gearcase. I even used the same binnacle although tthe 1987 was not systemmateched liek the new one is. Its pushing the old 13 Whaler SS (1987 model) about 46.4 on the handheld GPS. The new engine even trims out a lot more to give me more bow lift for speed. Its quieter and also uses less oil.

Cut your losses if you can't find parts and go with a newer motor.

By the way, I think Textron made the old TNT unit for OMC???
