Hello,

I am asking this question for a friend who recently purchased a used 1988 Johnson 90hp for his 196? 16' Whaler.

For this engine would you go with NGK's or Champions?

I have read the threads and have found that a SS 13x19 Prop is a pretty standard setup for his combo. Do you agree that this should be the starting point? If he uses his boat for water sports should he get a 13x17 and then cup it if he over revs?

We should mount the engine at least one hole up - right?

Max RPMS for this engine is 5500 - right?

Our target performance with 2 people should be low 40's WOT and great hole shot - right?

Just making sure that I gathered my info correctly. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Todd

I would do a 17" SST and cup if necessary 5500 redline. Low 40's is right. Run Champion L77JC4's or equivalent.

I agree with big. Run the 17 and keep an eye on the tach. This should be done with just you in the boat with a normal operating load. wot should be 5200-5500 rpm. Champion for O.M.C, NGK for Merc.

If you are running any kind of electronics, I would also suggest the "Q" in the champion spark plug...

QL77JC4

This is what my Evinrude dealer recommends and I have been using them for longer then I can remember... I use them on a 1985 70hp Evinrude, a 1985 150hp Evinrude and a 1988 8hp Evinrude...
