Fishen Fool - Welcome to the forum. I'm sure that you will enjoy and benefit from the site. Congradulations on buying your boat - you will enjoy it - and you have one of the best boats available. Now, some will suggest that you don't use all caps.
Now, I don't know what 18 Outrage you have. I have a '96 17 Outrage and rigged up downrigger mounts that I like very much. There are commercial downrigger mounts available - however, I haven't really looked at any of them in any detail. I made mine of 3/16 Stainless - contoured to fit exactly the gunwale and the load is then distributed to the entire gunwale and "clamped" to the gunwales and as such - they are not bolted or screwed to the boat. They are moved (removed) by simply loosening (removing) two 1/4 in machine screws.
I can e-mail you more detailed information or send you a copy of the drawing I made for mine - as you might desire. ---- Jerry/Idaho

Thanks for the reply Jerry.I was thinking along the same lines and maybe a stainless strap to the inside. The downriggers have a 48" boom with 10lb weights(ocean trolling)

FSHN FOOL - A little more explaination - mine are contoured to fit the top and the inboard side of the gunwale. I made the clamp using, in part, a flat piece of SS on the inside of the inboard side of the gunwale - using two 1/4 - 28 machine screws.
Incidently, I have 1/8 inch rubber (rubber innertube) between the glass and the stainless - protects the glass and helps prevent slippage, et.al.
I use 8 lb balls and a 3 foot boom - but you should be alright. The mounts I made put the load on the entire gunwale - instead of at a localized location. And a good secret - the vertical web (inboard side of the gunwale) is extremely strong with this loading. ---- Jerry/Idaho

Jerry, I would also like a copy of your drawing and more info on your downrigger mounts, if possible.
