How many RPM should a c.1985 Evinrude 70-HP turn at wide open throttle?

Depends on what year. Up to 1985 I believe they redlined at 5500. From 1986 or 1987 on they redline at 6,000. What is your model # so I can check the year.

Your engine is a 1985, RSGwynn.

5500rpm redline.

Red sky at night. . .

Thanks. I believe I'm a little short on prop.

The common props used on that engine are the 13 1/4 x 17" pitch or the 13 3/4 x 15" pitch..

The 17 gives you a little more top end and the 15 gives you a little better hole shot.

I used both props at different times on my 1985 Evinrude 70 hp on my Montauk... Yours is the same engine as mine was..
Wide Open Throttle should be between 4500 and 5500 RPM Max...

With a 15' classic whaler hull, you can actually run a 13"x19" Stainless with cupping on an '85 Johnson 70Hp engine. Just don't try to pull up slalom skiers with this prop on the engine.

With my 13-1/4"x17" cupped aluminum, it will actually spool up higher than redline at Wide-Open-Throttle (WOT).

If the hull is a 17' classic, use the props whalersman suggested.

This is on a 14 ft. McKee Craft that I'm restoring. I think the hull is very close to the Whaler 15. I just got a used ss prop, slightly dinged up, that looks to be a 19, so I'll give it a run to see what rpms I get before I take the prop to the shop to have it redone and maybe repitched.

I have a 1986 70 Johnson VRO on a 15' Striper. Is the max RPM 6000 for this year motor? Model # is J70TLCO.

Actually your model # says 1985 and no that is 5500. 86 is 5500 as well, I think 87 started the 6k.
