I just got a 1972 17' Whaler that has no motor. I found a
good Evinrude 70 hp., but the owner says it is a longshaft.
Long story short, will this motor work on this boat or what
length should I be looking for. Thanks for any information on the subject.

If by "long shaft" the owner means it is a 20" shaft, then it is the correct length for a 16'-7" Whaler, 1972 model or otherwise.
